Troy lands athletic sleeper from Woodward
Christian Harrison looked at his options, weighed them out and decided Sunday night that it was time to end his recruitment. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound wing from Woodward Academy is headed to Troy.
When it came down to it, Troy just felt like the perfect situation.
"I felt the most comfortable there. The coaches really wanted me there," Harrison said. "Talking things over with my high school coach and a lot of other people, they all said that wherever you decide make sure you are wanted. When you go to places that fit that, that's the best opportunity to succeed."
Head coach Phil Cunningham has Georgia ties, dating back to his days under Lefty Drisell at Georgia State. The staff, Harrison said, was a big reason why he picked the Sun Belt school.
"I really like the new coaching staff," Harrison said. "They are putting a lot money into the basketball program so that shows they are really serious about it. Plus, it is close to home, maybe two hours away. That's a big part of it. I think I can go there, work hard academically and basketball-wise to succeed. That's why I made my decision."
Harrison, one of the best athletes in Georgia's 2014 class, could be a sleeper that got away. That's what Troy is hoping for, at least. His above the rim ability was what drew the staff in, he said.
"My athleticism is what caught their eye," Harrison said. "They told me that since day one. I'm athletic enough to the point they can help me develop my skills and believe four years from now that everyone will be asking 'where did he come from?'. That's kind of how it's been for me. I've been unnoticed all of my AAU career."
