Notebook: Hoop for the Cure
Greater Atlanta Christian boys basketball is making sure people know who they are from the opening tip. It didn’t take long on Saturday.
The Spartans jumped out to a double-digit lead and never looked back in a 75-41 win over Eagles Landing at the Verizon Hoop for the Cure at St. Francis High.
“We want to throw the first punch,” Spartans senior Isaiah Wilkins said. “We are trying to play team-orientated ball.”
The figurative punch came in a variety of ways for the Spartans. Junior Cam Boyd opened the game with a 3-pointer and never let up. Any little room he got the shot was going up. His shooting forced Golden Eagles to scramble around defensively to no avail. Boyd finished with 28 all, but one, came from three-point range. He also had six rebounds and five assists.
“He allows us to stretch the defense,” Spartans coach Eddie Martin said.
However, that was just the beginning of the Spartans onslaught. Wilkins showed the leadership many people are impressed with Virginia signee. The 6-foot-7 forward was active on both ends of the floor and helped neutralize the Golden Eagles’ Jordan Session. Wilkins knocked down the mid-range jumper, pulled down rebounds and blocked shots, while giving GAC the energy it needed. He finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
“He is our motor,” Martin said. “He’s playing like he’s capable of playing. Like an ACC-caliber player.”
Eagles Landing, last season’s AAAA state champions, struggled to get into any dealing with GAC’s defense. The only person to get anything going was Sessions, a Georgia State signee. He finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Langston Hughes 52, Pace Academy 46
The Panthers’ relentless defense was all it needed to gain a lead. It also used the size inside of Fred Callaway. The junior forward had a team-high 15 points to pace the Panthers. Freshman guard Chuma Okeke chipped in with 10.
The Knights’ Armani Lashley scored a game-high 16 points.
Sandy Creek 73, South Cobb 70
Jalen Lee made sure to his Patriots team was not about to fall short in the final minutes of the teams game on Saturday. The senior guard knocked down shots and made a critical defense plays near the end of the game to help secure the victory. He finished with a team-high 23 points.
South Cobb, playing without their head coach because of two technical fouls on Friday, scratched its way back into the game with some relentless defense. The Eagles cut the lead twice to three-points but was unable to get over the hump because of the Patriots’ ability to knock down shots and play defense. Wesley Ingram finished with 23 points to lead the Eagles.
Johnson (Savannah) 64, Drew 51
The defending AAA state champions seemed to be toying around with its opponent for 30 minutes. Then, as if a light switched was turned on, the Atom Smashers turned it up defensively and went on a run before eventually pulling away in the end.
One of the catalysts down the stretch was junior forward Antwan Maxwell who finished with a game-high 20 points. He helped forced some turnovers and attacked the basket with purpose.
Drew fought and scratched its way through most of the game but it did not have enough to beat Johnson. Junior guard Maleek Taylor had 19 points to lead the Titans.
