Mitchell decides to roll with the Tide

The opportunity to play in a big conference and with some basketball friends, Devin Mitchell decided to end commit.

On Wednesday, the Collins Hill senior guard committed to the University of Alabama. His decision to call head coach Anthony Grant with the news came down to a few things.

“It came down to where I wanted to be at,” Mitchell said. “I wanted to be around a good group of people that have the same goals that I do.”

Another reason for Mitchell’s decision comes down to who decided to pledge their commitment to the Tide.

Justin Coleman pulled the trigger last week and Riley Norris on Monday that they were staying in-state. The trio knew each other from playing against one another on the summer circuit, while Mitchell and Coleman teamed up with the Georgia Stars on the EYBL Circuit helping strengthen their friendship. Norris played with Team Thad.

“We have always talked about playing together,” Mitchell said. “When Justin pulled the trigger first it kind of woke us up that we can really make this happen, especially with our relationship with the coaches. After Riley committed I was like, “I want to go play with my guys.”

“They respect my game and I respect their game as well.”

Mitchell narrowed his list of school down to four with the other three being UAB, Georgia and Kansas State. The others intrigued Mitchell, who cut his 30 offers down to eight just last week, but being on Tuscaloosa’s campus on an unofficial left a lasting image in his head.

“Everyone was cool with each other and they look like they have good guys on their team,” he said. “I want to be part of that atmosphere.”

Now that the process is over, Mitchell can concentrate on his senior season and help the Eagles make a deep run into the postseason. He also wants to help Alabama add some pieces to this Class of 2014 recruits.

“Now I am going to work on getting JT Gant,” Mitchell said.
