Instant analysis: Trayvon Reed to Maryland
According to a report from Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com, Trayvon Reed has committed to the University of Maryland. The 7-footer is in College Park on an official visit and seeing what the Terps have to offer.
His commitment isn't a surprise. He tried to commit last week but Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon wanted to talk to Reed before accepting the commitment. The visit sealed the deal for both parties.
Reed is a bit of an enigma. The former Shiloh center is one of the most unique players in the country. He's a long, blocks shots when he wants to and can run the floor. Ideally, a redshirt year would serve him well.
When Reed left the Atlanta Xpress this year and played for E1T1, he started to make the turn in his progress as a prospect. He had a dynamic starting five around him. His role was simple: guard the rim, protect the blocks, serve as a high post passer and allow his teammates to attack the rim with him serving as an offensive catch-all.
At Maryland, he has nice parts around him in the 2014 class. Patience is required for the passionate Terp fan base. He's going to take some time but with a coach that will push him and talent around him, the uptick may come quicker than realized.
Mark Turgeon has a history of developing quality big men. His style forces toughness and Reed could shine in that area. He's not the toughest guy but with his size, he'll be forced to be tougher because of style of play. That's a good thing for his long term development.
Reed told Evan Daniels of Scout.com that he welcomes the coaching he'll receive from Turgeon.
“He tells me he can make me a better player and it’s not going to be easy. That’s what I wanted to hear. He told me I’m going to have to earn my position," Reed told Scout.com.
When we talk about fit in basketball, this is a good one. Patience is required but the long term result could be good.
