Teams win BOTS Silver bracket championships

SUWANEE, GA – Championship Sunday is not just about the programs with the big names and players.

There are players working has hard as they can in order to win a title but more importantly go get the opportunity to earn a collegiate scholarship.

The Best of the South Silver bracket championships in the 16U and 17U proved the teams in them had the swag to be called champions.

17U: Georgia-based escape with title

All weekend Wolverine Basketball had a hard time getting on the winning side. The Georgia-based team went winless in pool play and ended up moving over to the Silver bracket.

So, instead of just throwing in the towel, the Wolverine’s hunkered down and decided to change its weekend for the better. They ended up beating Team United 58-57 in the championship.

Caleb Jenkins led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. Hamilton High’s Charkis Whitaker added 14 points. Daryl Dunlap, from Troup High, chipped in with 12 points.

Brandon Watts, from Weddington High, poured in a team-high 17 points for Team United. Cannon School’s Phillip Jewel had 11 points. Brandon Roddy, from Monroe High, finished with 10 points.

16U: Mississippi team wins championship

The only time anyone was able to stop LJC Elite in the Best of the South was because of forfeit.

This was the only time the team lost the rest of the weekend. The Mississippi-based team, however, finished third in the pool, which is why they were regulated to the Silver championship and dominated it.

LJC Elite beat the Atlanta Select Classic 50-42. Ricky Holden and Raekwon Pettis had 11 points apiece in the victory. Elite had balance scoring and an array of players to fill the scoresheet throughout the weekend.

However, the Select was looking to make sure it was not trying to have the championship slip from them completely. They fought and pressured but an early deficit in the first quarter was too much for them to overcome.

Phillip Venson, from McIntosh High, scored a team-high 15 points, which included four 3-pointers. Stockbridge’s Ronald McCloud added 11 points.
