Doral Moore enjoying a summer surge
I craned my neck to look up to him and said to the 7-footer: "Heard you were the man of the hour yesterday."
"Yeah," he said without missing a blink. "Guess I was."
Doral Moore, the budding class of 2015 prospect from Luella High School, is rolling with the punches at the Peach State Summer Showcase. The national media was buzzing about the Atlanta Xpress prospect after opening day at USC Aiken.
Life is changing at a quick pace for the humble kid from the suburbs south of Atlanta. Truth is, Moore has been on the uptick for quite some time now. He was a major talking point at the major events at Suwanee Sports Academy in the spring.
HoopSeen.com has Moore at the No. 4 overall spot in Georgia's 2015 class. The nation, however, is starting to take notice.
Moore's recruitment is quickly taking on the look of an elite-level player, too. Texas and Ohio State - two schools that don't traditionally spend time in Georgia's hoops recruiting landscape - have invested some serious time on the sidelines this week to see Moore. Indiana and Kansas are throwing a hat into the mix.
The locals - Georgia and Georgia Tech - have long had Moore on the recruiting wish list. Georgia's Mark Fox and Brian Gregory have invested court time into him already this week at the Peach State.
The July recruiting surge is happening.
"(My dad) got like 20 calls (in the last 24 hours)," Moore said.
"The whole month of June I worked really on my conditioning. I've been working on my hook shot a lot. I've been trying to get better. I used to be bad at a lot of things but I'm working and getting better and better."
Talk to Moore and you'll find a refreshing recruit. He's humble and honest. He's also hungry and self-aware.
"I'm just a 7-foot nerd," Moore said. "That's what I am. I like science, stuff like that."
Academics will be a factor for the big man. "It's number one. If I get hurt in college, I have to fall back on something. When the air goes out of the ball, I have to find something else to do," he said.
Moore said he will take some visits in the fall but the plan remains the same - just keep playing and improving.
"I expect (this recruiting surge) for myself because I know what I can put out there on the floor," Moore said. "That's what I expected for myself because I've worked hard to get there."
