Mitchell knows scoring, but wants to prove more
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Filling a need is important for any basketball program. Several program are looking for a consistent shooter and scorer, Devin Mitchell provides both.
The rising senior has shown he can do both efficiently. Mitchell knows can shoot it from all over the floor and with some range. He also has a knack for scoring in the lane or transition. All Mitchell wants to do is find a place looking for these attributes.
“I am looking for a school with a good coaching staff that can really make me the best player possible, combined with my work ethic,” he said. “I am looking for a spot that needs what I can bring to the table at the earliest; where I can have an impact right away.”
Mitchell will have plenty of options to pick from when it comes to colleges. He currently holds offers from Alabama, Boston, Charleston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Georgia, Georgia St, Kansas St, Kennesaw St, LaSalle, Marquette, Mercer, Mississippi, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Tulsa, Virginia, Wake Forest and Xavier. On Thursday, he took an unofficial visit to Georgia. This is before he jumps on a plan to “Little” Manhattan for an unofficial visit with Kansas State.
Taking these was nothing Mitchell intended on doing just yet. His plan was to narrow his college choices in July and take the five visits allotted by the NCAA in August. Things changed as his relationship with Kansas State grew.
“They jumped up higher on my list than I thought they would ever be,” Mitchell said. “I had a good relationship with the coaches. We talk almost daily.”
Most of the conversations have been pretty calm but it is fair to say some has included what Mitchell does best on the basketball court. After 18 games for the Georgia Stars on the Nike EYBL Circuit, he averaged nine points a game in 15 minutes of action. Mitchell was 43 percent (41-for-97) from three-point range.
Unfortunately, the Stars were locked of the Peach Jam in July despite having a winning record (10-8). The experience of playing against the best competition possible partially fulfilled Mitchell’s travel basketball quest.
“I loved playing on the circuit,” he said. “Everyone had to sacrifice something. I had to sacrifice a lot of minutes. It teaches a lot about yourself and that you have to win games to be successful in that league.”
Playing on the Circuit also gave Mitchell a taste of the next level. Currently, for his Collins Hill High, Mitchell hardly gets off the floor. As a matter of fact, he averaged 22 points a game as the Eagles advanced to the state playoffs then earning a second-team Class AAAAAA selection, first-team Region 7-AAAAAA selection and playing in the GACA All-Star game in Savannah.
He carried all that momentum into the spring and knows July will be a busy month, albeit with another travel team the Southern Kings.
“Since the EYBL was over with I want to show a little bit more of my array of skills,” Mitchell said. “I want to show what I can do in a lot of minutes. I want to show I can play both ends of the floor.”
One thing is for sure though he knows how to score.
