NPES: Stars excel as it wins 17U championship
SUWANEE – One word can best describe the 17U championship of the Norman Parker Elite Showcase: dominating.
When the Georgia Stars and Atlanta Xpress met up in the finals many were anxious to see what the matchup would bring. After going toe-to-toe for most of the first-half, the Stars pulled away in grand fashion with an 80-50 win at Suwanee Sports Academy on Sunday.
Leading the way for the Stars was Justin Coleman. The lightening quick guard from Wenonah, Alabama finished with a game-high 19 points. He helped set the tempo with his quickness, while Tadric Jackson added the muscle. This South Georgia native added 11 points in the victory.
The Stars just turned it up defensively in the second half, which helped get their offense going. Being relentless on the defensive end meant that the Stars needed to control the boards, which it did. There were no official stats taken for rebounds but the Stars did not allow the Xpress to get too many second chances.
Devocio Butler managed to get into a rhythm, of sorts. He scored a team-high 12 points most of them coming while in the open floor. Michael Tucker added 10 points, including a thunderous dunk late in the second half. It was one of the few shining moments for the Xpress.
The Stars team just controlled every aspect of the game and imposed its will against their in-state rival. Both teams were physical with one another and at one point the action became heated. Things settled down but by then the Stars were well on their way to winning the title.
