March to Macon: Meet the 7A No. 1 seeds

Let's meet the No. 1 seeds in the 2023 GHSA 7A state tournament. Each of these teams won their respective region tournament and secured a number one seed in the bracket. Let's meet 'em. 

REGION 1

Lowndes  (17-10) 
NOTABLE WINS: Veterans (2x), Bainbridge, Brunswick, Madison Memorial (WI), Valdosta (3x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Campbell. Gainesville (FL), Brunswick, Bainbridge, St. Pius X, McDonough, The Village Christian (FL), Southbridge (FL), Camden County, Valdosta 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Sam Shoptaw, Marcus Black 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Lions only have two wins against teams with more than 20 wins on the season. 

REGION 2

Carrollton (20-6) 
NOTABLE WINS: South Gwinnett, Langston Hughes, Westlake (2x), Mays, Campbell, Pebblebrook 
NOTABLE LOSSES: Hiram, Buford, Campbell, Westlake, Pebblebrook 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Caleb Odom, O’Brien Watkins
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: When Carrollton is at its very best, they are guarding. And guarding hard.

REGION 3

McEachern (21-6) 
NOTABLE WINS: Greenforest, Westlake, Grovetown, Memphis East (TN), Newton, The Villages (FL), Jonesboro, Hillgrove (3x), King’s Ridge, Oak Ridge (FL), Calvary Christian (FL), 
NOTABLE LOSSES: Duncanville (TX), Wasatch Academy (UT), Kell, Pebblebrook, Pine Bluff (AR), Jonesboro (AR)
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Ace Bailey (Rutgers), JaMichael Davis (Rutgers), Moses Hipps
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Indians played a monster schedule and only racked up one loss to an in-state team. Since the start of the 2023 calendar year, they are beating teams by an average of 25 points a game. 

REGION 4

Grayson (21-5)

REGION 5
Wheeler (21-6) 
NOTABLE WINS: Etowah, Grovetown, Kimball (TX), Tampa Catholic (FL), Centennial (CA), Keenan (SC), Cherokee (3x), Newton, Osborne, North Cobb, Walton
NOTABLE LOSSES: Columbus (FL), Imhotep Charter (PA), Paul VI (VA), John Marshall (VA), Sierra Canyon (CA), Bishop Gorman (NV) 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Isaiah Collier, Arrinten Page, Jelani Hamilton
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Wildcats haven’t lost to a team from Georgia this season. Not a one. And when you have the nation's No. 1 player in Isaiah Collier, you have to feel really good about your chances. If you are into the history of Georgia HS hoops, getting a chance to see Collier play in the postseason one last time is here. Make sure you get it in.

REGION 6
Lambert (20-7) 
NOTABLE WINS: Chattahoochee, Mill Creek, North Forsyth, North Hopkins (KY), Lebanon (TN), Mountain View, Milton (2x), Alpharetta, Denmark (2x)  
NOTABLE LOSSES: Peachtree Ridge, Denmark, North Atlanta, Walton, Trinity Christian, South Forsyth, Dutchtown 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Niko Wilson, Cam Bland, James Tyre
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: 9-0 at home this season 

REGION 7

Norcross (23-4)
NOTABLE WINS: Sandy Creek, Marist, Newton, New Faith Christian, Tennessee, Madison Ridgeland, Berkmar, Peachtree Ridge (2x), Berkmar (3x), Thompson (AL), North Gwinnett (2x) 
NOTABLE LOSSES: Myers Park (NC), North Mecklenburg (NC), Pebblebrook, Peachtree Ridge
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Mier Panoam, Samarion Bond, Bilal Abdur-Rahman, Lamariyon Jordan, 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Blue Devils have taken care of their home court this season, going 11-0 on Spalding Drive. The No. 1 seed is so valuable this time of season because of the home-court advantage. 

REGION 8 

Buford (20-6)
NOTABLE WINS: Grovetown, Drew Charter, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, Cherokee, McDonough, Walnut Grove, Carrollton, Mountain View (2x), Mill Creek (2x), River Ridge, Collins Hill (2x) 
NOTABLE LOSSES: Lovett, Parkview, Eagle’s Landing, Archer, Collins Hill, Mill Creek 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Chase James-Robinson, Cam Kelly, David Burnett, London Williams
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Buford is 13-0 at home, an important stat to note going into the playoffs. The Wolves have the nicest - and biggest - gym in the state of Georgia. Also, Buford has only had one really bad loss on the season, dropping one to Eagle’s Landing 73-50. The rest of their losses have either been one or two possession games.
