DC's Grassroots Summer Championship Notebook: Day Two

The Grassroots Summer Championship was filled with competitive games today from all divisions. For day 2, I wanted to mix in a few teams from the class of 2023 and 2024. I wanted to put some eyes on some players and build up their profiles up as we prepare for next year’s travel season. Here are some players that stood out from day 2.

Standout Performers:

DJ Woods was definitely in his bag in a game against the Mercury Elite. This 6-foot guard is a sniper from everywhere on the floor with his quick release. Woods came out with a hot knocking down four threes putting up 18 points in just the first half; he was looking to close this one out early. Woods continued his outstanding play into the 2nd half leading the Florida Bayhawks to a 62-57 victory. As I went to get his photo, Woods simply stated, “That game felt good.” It certainly was a great game, and he would finish with 28 points

Bronson Borlace was probably about one of the most intense games I have witnessed at the Grassroots Summer Championship. In a match-up against Team Speights FL, this 6-foot-7 big handled his business the entire game, and the other team struggled to contain him. Borlace is highly skilled in the paint, and each time he got the ball, he finished off with a dunk every time he could. Not only could he score the rock, but Borlace was also grabbing down every rebound he could. He would lead Team Florida to a 47-45 victory with a clutch dunk to end the game. Borlance stepped up when his team needed him most and finished with 20 points.

Standout Performers: The Underclassmen

Team South Carolina 15u had one the strongest teams of the day. The duo of Travis Harvey Jr and Zayn Valentine played great, putting up some good numbers in a major way. Harvey is a 5-foot-9 PG who can control the tempo with his swift ball handling and smooth passes. He has a great shot and does a great job of handling pressure from the defense. Harvey would finish with 19 points. Valentine is another 5-foot-9 guard that can really score with his magnificent shot from the three and can provide some aggressive defense forcing many turnovers. He dropped 18 points and drained five 3s to pull away from the opposing team. This combo punch would secure a good win over the Wisconsin Rap 68-49
