Top underclassmen at the 2020 HoopSeen #ATLJAM, part IV
The 2020 Atlanta Jam is in the books and our staff has gone through a weekend full of notes to compile our Best of series from the summer showcase. Today we continue our look at the top overall underclassmen performers from the event.
The more I watched the class of 2022 guard, the more I liked him. I liked him so much in fact, I think you could argue he was one of the three best guard prospects in the entire event. Sandy is a powerful guard on both sides of the ball. The 16 and under division is always an interesting one for me to evaluate in. There is a clear separation of those who have it for the next level, particularly at the Division I level, and those who don’t. Sandy has it and he’s starting to create separation from his peers. Defensively, he is very good. He’s activa and athletic. On offense, he’s a heat-seeking missile that only knows one target - the rim. Sandy did a nice job of getting to the foul line and he converted when he got there. Sandy will be a guard to chart in the scholasistic season ahead. He could be on the verge of a major turn upward.
The opening night against the Atlanta All-Stars provided me with the first look of a guard that I believe is on the cusp of turning the corner. Unless there is a wall of defenders that are set and locked in, it seemed impossible to keep him from getting to the rim. End to end he’s as dynamic as anyone on the court and his ability to get to spots in a few dribbles should not go unnoticed. Although his stat line will not jump off the page, his impact did. I’m looking forward to watching him turn the corner. - Tai Young
The three point shot was falling for Joseph Poventud on Friday night as he led the Florida Suns to a big win over the Flame. The 6’2 2023 guard knocked down five triples on his way to 20 points. His length caused quite a few problems for opponents this weekend as he bullied smaller guards and was able to rise up over them for buckets. He looks like he could be next in line at the always-talented Dr. Phillips in Orlando. - Bre Singleton
