Tennessee Fall Preview camp team 8 evaluations

The inaugural Tennessee Fall Preview took place on Saturday and some of the best talent in the surrounding Nashville area converged at LaVergne high school for the state's premier exposure camp. Our staff came away impressed with several players. Here are our evaluations for team 8.

Kolby Searcy, 2022 G, Lighthouse Christian: The sophomore combo guard had good length, shot-making ability, and made timely shots from beyond the 3 point line. His layups came from getting by his man off the dribble with shot fakes and ball fakes from the perimeter.  Searcy defends both guard positions with passion, often causing deflections with his long arms. Searcy’s activity made him snatch down rebounds on both sides of the ball.

Tyrone Jackson 2020 G, Northeast: The 5’9 guard has a strong upper body, athleticism and some savvy, to make him a true scoring option. A quick first step launched him past opponents for paint touches, then at the rim, his floater came into effect. Johnson excels in the pick and roll with his burst of speed while staying under control. Jackson is a high clip scorer with the ability to successfully shoot the deep 3 ball and mid-range shot. Being tough as nails is the best way to describe the overall game that Jackson displayed.

William Tyler Mcclain, 2021 G, Lipscomb Academy: Heady point guard with good court vision, Mcclain understands and controls the tempo of the game offensively. Mcclain can score from the perimeter and put pressure on the defense by attacking the basket. His ability to read defenders in the pick and roll create his own shot or find others made him a serviceable option offensively. There was no drop off defensively as he would guard his position and even disrupt passing lanes as a help-side defender.

Isaac Rankhorn, 2020 G, Montgomery Central: A long, lefty shooting guard with a good form and release.  Rankhorns a nice sharpshooter from long distance that can knock in shots from the mid-range. Although he had it rolling as a scorer, Rankhorn did a great job at making the “one more” pass and kicking over for a good to great shot. The Montgomery Central guard did a good a great job rebounding on the offensive end for successful put-backs or getting fouled and going to the foul line.  His energy as a defender helped his team get some stops and turn offense to defense.

Marshall Ashley, 2023 G, Oakland: This young speedster shifted gears several times but never got out of control. His great court vision and willingness to pass lead to him setting up his teammates in transition. When the offense bogged down, Ashley took control of the game and used high ball screens to get a piece of the paint. Marshall really gets after it on the defensive side of the ball creating total havoc for his opponent.

Jayden Lucas, 2022 F, Smyrna: An undersized, lefty 4 man that finishes well around the rim with either hand.  Lucas doesn’t take-off plays and is the first player to dive after a loose ball. Others may have the size advantage at this stage but that doesn’t take away for Lucas’s energy and effort. Watching him rebound the ball against taller and bigger players was constant throughout all three games. One of the most unselfish players on the team allowed everyone to share the wealth.

Tre’von Bass, 2022 G, Siegal:  Tre’von excels in transition with great court vision and passing abilities with either hand. Being cat-quick has its perks as the sophomore guard could wiggle past defenders to generate scoring. One of the few 3 level scorers in camp would find a good balance between impacting the game as a scorer or facilitator. Defensively he may be very underrated as his speed allows him to play angles and keep his opponents in check. While all of these things are great, the biggest compliment to Bass’s game is his fire to be a fierce competitor.
