Andrew Stimpson’s Day 2 Notebook at US Amateur Nationals

The US Amateur Nationals continued to be a tournament with non stop action this Friday.

Top Players

Braden Zapp Tennessee Tigers 2021

One word to describe Zapp: Smooth. This point guard was a joy to watch today for the Tigers. He had 24 points in a win today against Atlanta Tapout. Zapp is a pass first point guard that is a leader on the court. I got to cover him at the Best of the South and his great play has continued here at US Amateur Nationals. Zapp has a beautiful shot and can finish well for a smaller guard. Look for Zapp to have a big Saturday for the Tigers.

Demarcus Lacey Iron City Huskies 2022

Demarcus Lacey was an absolute beast today as I got to watch him score 30 points in a big win for the Huskies. Lacey is super strong for his age and used that to his advantage. He was able to use his body to drive and finish at will. He was also extremely efficient from the free throw line where he earned 10 of his 30 points from free throws. Lacey will be a guard to lookout for as his team looks to compete for a championship.

Best Team: All Ohio Gold 17U

All Ohio Gold hasn’t been blowing out teams by 20+, but one thing they do is show up every game and finish every game. They played 3 games today which is tough for any team, and they finished the day 3-0. Jonzell Norrils came up clutch for All Ohio as he had a game winning lay up for them to beat a tough SBC squad. Mason Loeffler is a sniper who is also sneaky athletic and can finish around the rim. The overall size of this team is impressive and they showed how well they can play together as they won each game today by 5 points or less. With great guard play and great paint protection from their big men expect a big Saturday from All Ohio Gold.

Best Game: All Ohio Gold vs SBC 17U

This game was just an absolute classic. Back and forth the whole game. Fast paced, it was a game that any basketball fan would enjoy. It was one of those games where whoever got the ball last had the best chance to win and that team would be All Ohio Gold. With it being 58-58 All Ohio gave the ball to their point guard and team leader Jonzell Norrils. Norrils had 7 seconds to make something happen and he did. Norrilis got the ball and made a strong drive to his left and finished at the rim with 1 second left to go to win the game for All Ohio in a classic against SBC.
