BOTS Day 2 Notebook: 16U

CARTERSVILLE, GA - The 16-and-under action was heavy at Georgia Highlands College for Day 2 of the Best of the South tournament. Here’s a rundown of the action:

The best matchup of the day came from HYPE 2021(Travis) and PSB Elite (McCarthy). This summer, a name we’ve become familiar hearing is Matthew Cleveland. Cleveland led HYPE in scoring and helped them seal the victory in the second half. Transition opportunities served him well. He pushed the break and finished at the basket despite contesting defenders. Georgia State and Kennesaw State are the main schools showing interest in the 6-4 Forward at the moment. Also, his frontcourt mate Cole Middleton added value as a defensive anchor in the paint and as a consistent scorer in the low-post. For PSB Elite, their point guard RJ Johnson had a great game. He played with pace and wasn’t phased by on-ball pressure. He utilized his pull-up jumpers in the midrange area and knocked down shots from the perimeter. Wofford and USC Upstate are showing the most interest in Johnson.

Broderick Marable stood out at 6’8 for EOTO. Marable has the physique and frame you’d want in a post player. Against the Georgia Elite Ballers, he posted 15 points while deflecting shot attempts away from the rim and snagging rebounds off the glass. His ability to put the ball on the floor and lead fast break opportunities was also noted. Marable could be an interesting prospect as he continues to develop in the near future.

Terrence Edwards (Atlanta Top Flight Elite) and Jaylin Brown (ATL Big Five) were the highest scorers of the day. They both posted 30 points in their respective games. Edwards and Brown similarly had their success attacking the paint and converting contested layups/floaters. Easily two of the better finishers of the day.

Other Notable outings:

  • G Devonte White (Boynton Heat) w/ 23 points in a win vs. Lagrange Wildcats.
  • F Chance Moore (Game Elite 2021) w/ 23 points in win vs. Star Ready 2020
  • PG Zion Wimby (G3 Elite) w/ 19 points vs. Carolina Pressure.
