2018 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions 14U top performers

The 14 and under division of the 2018 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions was jam-packed with talent. We take a deep dive into the age group and identify the top overall performers from the talent-filled weekend.

Robert Cowherd, Georgia Stars, 2022 G: Few players have the skill set, IQ, and versatility to be an all-around scorer. However, Robert Cowherd made it look easy and he did it flawlessly. As a 2022 prospect, Cowherd already has the confidence to get a bucket at will. He’s effective at scoring from anywhere on the court at all three levels.  His IQ was displayed by his patience in not settling for bad shots. He utilized his strength as a bigger guard and his ball handling ability to create a good portion of his shot attempts.  The Georgia Stars won the 14U championship this past weekend, and Robert was a huge factor in their success.

Joyful Hawkins, ATL Big Five, 2022 F/C (pictured above): Joyful Hawkins was one of the most interesting prospects to watch during his play at Gibbons.  He stands at 6-foot-7 and he possesses key intangibles that you’d want in a bigger forward. It was rare to see a fastbreak occur for ATL Big Five, and not notice Hawkins sprinting the floor in order to make a play at the rim or get an offensive rebound for a putback. He smartly used his athleticism in his rebounding, his finishing in the paint, and his interior defense as a rim protector. His shooting touch was evident with his consistency in knocking down elbow jumpers. Joyful has a high ceiling as a player in the 2022 class. As he continues to perfect his fundamentals, his game will surely be dominant on both sides of the ball.

Dillon Hunter, Georgia Stars, 2022 PG: Point guards who have the ability to knock down open shots will always make their offense more effective. This was exactly the case for Dillon Hunter of the Georgia Stars. Hunter’s outside shooting was impressive. He connected from beyond the arc several times. This made it much easier for him to space the floor and create easy scoring opportunities for others. Hunter valued attacking the defense and kicking out to his open teammates on the wings. He also set up plays for his bigs to get easy baskets. His playmaking skills gave him the offensive edge against opposing defenders.

J’Mariyae Roberts, GME 2022, 2022 PG: J’Mariyae Roberts was aggressive in doing whatever it took to put points on the board for his GME 2022 squad. He led his team in scoring throughout the weekend by averaging about 18 points per contest.  His main scoring skill set was his ability to finish around the rim. He beat defenders off the dribble and got in the paint with ease. He even finished well against defenders in transition on fast breaks. Roberts made it known that he wasn’t limited in his scoring by knock down the three-point shot as well.

Cedric Seabrough, Bostic Next Level, 2022 G/F: Seabrough has been another consistent performer at HoopSeen events this season. He’s got the physique of a linebacker, but the skillset of a guard. He handled the ball well and was tough to stop in the paint. Seabrough made his living finishing at the rim and converting shots over the defense. He played solid defense using his size to protect the paint. Also, Cedric was confident in grabbing rebounds and turning them into transition opportunities for his team.
