Bre Singleton Saturday #Gibbons Notebook: Younger age groups

Day 2 of HoopSeen Gibbons is in the books. I spent the day at Berkmar checking out the Middle School action.

In the 14U division, Southern Stampede handled Georgia Fusion Elite with ease in the first game of the day, 70-44. The standout in this game was Stampede guard AJ White. Whether it be slashing to the rim or knocking down threes from deep, White had it going all morning. He had 18 points in the win without breaking a sweat.

There was a shootout from two players from Champions Elite and WE Elite in a 9:15am game. With just six players, WE Elite managed to keep the score close until late in the second half. PG Shamar Hawthorne of Champions Elite came out on fire hitting 5 threes on his way to 19 points. WE Elite G/F Derek McDonald scored from just about anywhere, hitting 5 threes of his own in a 27 point performance. McDonald did it all, creating plays for teammates, controlling the boards, and finishing strong. Champions Elite pulled away with about three and a half minutes left to play, stretching their lead to 14. They took home the win, 57-43.

Brody Peebles of Pro One Select Navy continued his Spring ‘17 mean streak Saturday morning. He  had a monster first half against the Harrison Hoyas, scoring 18 of the team’s 36 points. He would go on to drop 39, showing off his back-to-the-basket game and effortless shooting. Harrison big man Tre Chatman put up all but 3 of his 17 points in the second half. Jeremy Austin added 12, but the Hoyas simply didn't have enough fire power to outlast the Peebles show.

The most creative finisher I saw all day was 2021 PG Jalen Jeter. Running with Lake Worth Pride, Jeter has the handles and explosiveness to get to the basket on any defender. Many of his 18 points came by way of up and unders and reverse layups, using the rim for protection against the trees in the paint.

The 13U teams got after it a little later in the afternoon. Hoops 360-Red star Caleb Blackwell continued to impress. He had 21 in a loss against the South Florida Rockets. The Rockets got great performances from Houston Culpepper and Jullian Lewis who had 15 and 13 points respectively.

Both Gavin Morris and Oscar Lynch put up 15 points in Triple Double’s win over Chattanooga Elite. Despite Keilan Holloway’s 15, Chatt. Elite couldn't figure out how to get stops and scores late. Triple Double finished them off 60-43.

Wellington Wolves got 23 points out of Ryan Davis in their matchup with GA Jazz. Davis grabbed rebounds and took it coast to coast on several occasions and made the right decisions when necessary.

The younger guys in the 12U division weren't shy by any means. EAB Tigers got it done against the Cherokee Spurs, 53-33. Joshua Roberts put up 16. Jared Allen added 11 in the win.

Lamaryion Jordan and Taune Allen handled the bulk of the scoring for their respective teams. Jordan put up 16 for D-Elite while Taune Allen managed 14 in a losing effort. D-Elite held in to win it 39-35.

DCA 2023 Elite got a big first halves from Seth Fitzgerald, Stephon Castle, and Marquis Hood in the last game vs North Ga State Warriors. A three-quarter court shot gave DCA a 47-24 lead through one half. With the lead stretched to 30 early in the second half, DCA showed no signs of letting up. Good finished with 18, Castle with 14, and Fitzgerald with 9. DCA 76, Warriors 51.
