Kyle Sandy's Georgia Cup III Friday Notebook
The Live Period is here and so is Georgia Cup III. While most eyes are on the older divisions, the youngsters were on full display Friday night.
Dubbed Up
11U Triple Double came away with two white-knuckle victories on a busy opening night. Caleb Underwood scored a team-high 10 points in their 42-39 win over the Walton Flame. Center Alex Cunningham used his size to his advantage and hit the glass hard in the overall team-effort victory. In the loss, the Walton Flame got 16 points from shifty point guard Devonte Newell.
In their 8:30 game, Triple Double stunned the SI Kings on a Samuel Thacker buzzer beater. Thacker drove the lane and banked in the winner, only to be mobbed by his teammates in celebration after. Thacker scored eight points while Underwood added nine and Jaxson Bell netted a team-high 10.
Mr. Versatile
11U AHT defeated TNBC Select 33-29 behind Mason Lewis’ (pictured) 16 points. The largest player on his team, the forward did everything for AHT. The offense ran through Lewis who created his own fast breaks by taking defensive rebounds the length of the court. He got to the basket and was constantly seen hitting the floor as he went full tilt. With a guard-like skillset for his size, Lewis is a nice cornerstone for AHT.
10U Guards
Georgia Kings West held off a late charge from D-Elite, 28-25. Big guards Tony Montgomery and Dant’e Hill came up with big defensive stops in the fourth quarter. Their size and length held Chris Garland in check until the sharp handling guard got free in spurts. Montgomery finished with a team-high seven points and Hill added four. Kenyon Rivera gave D-Elite a nice lift with a game-high nine points.
