NC’s top hoopers put on a spectacle in Triad All Star Game

It was Triad All Star weekend once again and Walkertown High School was the site for this years festivities.

The featured Triad All Star game pitted two stacked rosters compiled with players from the Eastern and Western parts of the Tarheel state.  Coach Rusty Larue head coach of West Forsyth was on the winning side. His side didn’t feature as much star power as the East side but they made big plays and gelled nicely together on the court.

A game like this provides a final showcase for seniors both signed and unsigned that aspect trumps the score. The talent on both sides shined Justin McCluney (2017, Unsigned) was named MVP of the game he scored 17 to pace the West team.  Carter Phillips from North Surry (2017, Catawba commit), and Jacob Brown of Forest Trail (Fairmont State commit) also put on solid performances. Both players showed played good team ball Phillips is money from deep and flashed some surprising athleticism, Brown really pushed the pace and was able to comfortably finish with both hands at the rim.

Down low Zaire Williams (2017, Radford commit) repping Winston Salem Prep was a beast on the boards and did well scoring over top a long team East frontline.

On the East side there were a host of highflyers their performance was essence of Phi Slamma Jamma in the 80’s. Northwest Guilford teammates Jalen Spicer (2017, NC A&T commit) and Reggie Davis (2017, Lynchburg College commit) lit up the highlight reel. These two guys court chemistry was apparent from the tip it seemed Spicer found Davis on an Alley every time he broke to the basket. Spicer is an electrifying ball handler with a deadly first step, and Davis is an incredible athlete and is liable to bring the rim down anytime he bangs it.

Jordan Perkins (2017 NCCU commit)  of Greensboro Day one of the more highly touted prospects at the event came off the bench and did damage from the three point line. Perkins has a tight handle and is big for the point guard position. Whenever his side fell down late he nailed consecutive deep balls to keep them in it until the last possession.

It was a competitive atmosphere  Austin Gilyard (2017, uncommitted)  of the West and J.P. Moorman  (2017, Temple commit) on the East stole the show. With a packed gym filled with coaches, recruiters, corporate sponsors, and raving fans.  These two young studs went at each other with no regards.

Local radio personality and MTV’s Wild N Out star B Daht was there on the call for the action to up the ante. Gilyard seemed to come into this game with something to prove being one of the better guards in the state many feel he’s been under recruited. The guard played tough for his side he nailed a huge three late in the game over Moorman to give his team the lead, this play displayed his mental toughness because he came back strong after Moorman tossed his shot into the stands on the previous play.

Moorman had a clear size advantage and was able to abuse Gilyard some in the paint as neither player backed down. The crowd loved it and cheered loudly for both players it was all clean competitive basketball.

For some of the unsigned players this was another chance to land some offers as multiple colleges sent representatives (UNC Pembroke and Catawba Valley) among others.

Jalen Seegers leaves judges speechless in Triad All Star Dunk Contest

The highly anticipated Dunk contest was the last event to close out All Star weekend and Jalen Seegers (2017, NC A&T commit) was crowned Dunk champion.

A panel that consisted of former college and high school coaches along with some former NC hoops legends judged the contestants. There were multiple dunks that got the crowd and judges hype, these players put on an impressive exhibition of athleticism.

In the final round Seegers shut down the gym and ended any speculation as to who the crown was going home with, after he leaped over five star defensive end prospect KJ Henry and Caught a one handed alley oop for the win. He received a score of “8,9,10) from former UNC star and current NBA player PJ Hairston. Special guest announcer B- Daht lost his mind on the mic and the crowd followed.

Seegers was greeted with chest bumps and handshakes from all the other onlooking all stars before he was officially crowned champion.

In it’s sixth year of existence, this event ran by coach Keshawn Bishop has grown in popularity every year. His mission is to provide as many hoops opportunities as he can for these young stars. Champs provided all official athletic apparel and Dicks sporting goods also sponsored the event.

Many former stars and state hoops pioneers were present for the event. College coaches left pleased and the kids were awarded a chance to rock their school colors once last time.
