Garrett Tucker's USSSA Nationals Saturday Notebook

With the beginning of bracket play underway, Saturday's action at the HoopSeen USSSA Nationals featured highly contested games and close finishes. A handful of teams positioned themselves for a run at a championship appearance on Sunday, while some players made their own marks.

Here are the storylines from Saturday's action at Suwanee Sports Academy...

  • 2018 power forward Brock Jancek (pictured) has quietly put together a productive USSSA Nationals. The 6-foot-5 big man plays with a high motor and is terrific around the rim. He has consistently averaged a double-double in points and rebounds. Jancek is relentless in the paint and has no problem grinding things out in the paint. He isn't the flashiest player around, but he definitely gets things done in a quiet manner.
  • My game of the day was an easy one, as it came from the 9U division with Team Mamba and the Gwinnett Hawks. The game was back and forth throughout the game, but Team Mamba used some stifling defense and opportune offensive rebounds to close the game on a big run and come out victorious, 38-37. Not only was it a close game, but the environment was exactly what you would expect closing in on a championship at Nationals.
  • In another close game, Dylan Canaille scored 10 points to help Plantation Power beat Atlanta Tap Out in the 13U division.
  • Benny Fragile dropped an impressive 30 points in a win for CBF Florida in the 9U division.
  • In the 11U division, the Miami Monsters have proven they will be a tough out going into Sunday. Landon Suarez is a reason for that. The young shoot drained three 3's in their afternoon win over the Atlanta Nets.
  • The Miami Lightning have been impressive over the course of the tournament so far. The 13U squad used a total team effort this morning to put away the Montgomery Fire. Jacorey Brookes (21 points), Craig Starks (19 points), and Julian Garcia (17 points) all scored in double figures to help them advance.
