Georgia Cup III Championships: Middle School

14U Orange Championship: Atlanta Assault 39, Atlanta Xpress 38

This week at the third Georgia Cup of the travel season, the 8th grade 14U divisions were loaded with good teams. In the end it came down to the Atlanta Xpress and Atlanta Assault. 

The first half was a close battle of strong defenses. The size of the Xpress allowed them to hit the offensive glass and lead by four at the half. 

The Assault started the second half with a bang, going on a 14-0 run to take the lead by 8. The Xpress chipped away to tie the game in the last seconds. In the final seconds, a free throw by Julian Mackey gave the Assault the lead for good as the won 39-38 to claim the trophy. Mackey, CJ Hines and Zion Wimby led the Assault with 7 points apiece while Chris Youngblood led Xpress with 21. - Carter Wilson 

14U Black championship: Georgia Class Act Academy 58, Team Showcase 49 OT

On an intense Championship Sunday at the Georgia Cup III, a title game that needed an extra period to decide the winner was only fitting. 

Georgia Class Act Academy took full advantage of the extra four minutes and brought home the title with a 58-49 win. 

GCAA big man Jacorei Turner was the most important player on the floor in the title game. He scored inside, he defended the rim and rebounded well in and out of his area. 

Team Showcase was led by Devon Dorsey, who scored 17 points in the title game. Jordan Smalls scored 12 points. - Justin Young

13U Orange Championship: GA Xclusive Metro 63, All-GA Elite 40

GA Xclusive Metro’s balanced attack wore down the smaller All-GA Elite. Devon Cottle got Xclusive off to a fast start with 10 first quarter points before finishing with a game-high 14 to go along with his three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Madison Durr added nine points and six rebounds. KJ Doucet contributed nine points as well and center Julian Nixon swatted away four shots. All-GA Elite received 12 points and 14 rebounds from Dara Olonade and 11 points and five boards from Rahnell Jackson. - Kyle Sandy 

13U Black championship: Club Orange 46, Warrior Elite 32

Club Orange ran the table in the 13U division, going 5-0 for the weekend after a 46-32 win over Warrior Elite for the Black championship. Cameron Williams scored 10 points in the title game while Didi Hendricks pumped in nine points in the title tilt. 

Club Orange was impressive throughout the tournament, winning on average by 28.8 points a game. 

Andrew Allison scored 10 points while Cooper Turner added seven in defeat for Warrior Elite. 

12U Black Championship: Hollywood Stars 54, Gwinnett Hawks 24

A monster game from Khristian Clark and an insurmountable run led Hollywood Stars to the 12U Black championship. The Stars led 8-0 out of the gate before the Hawks took a 9-8 advantage. After that point it was all Stars, Hollywood igniting a 38-2 run. Clark finished with nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks to power the Stars from the inside. DT Hamilton led all scorers with 15 points and four rebounds. Jalin Mikell scored 10 points while Makaleb McBride (8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) came up big as well. - Kyle Sandy 

12U Orange Championship: Atlanta Xpress Whetstone 66, Georgia Canes 47

Andre Young paced the Georgia Canes with 17 points and five rebounds but it wasn’t enough to stop the Atlanta Xpress. The Xpress used a late surge in the second quarter to take a 25-22 lead into the half and extended it throughout the second half. Bruce Thornton finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists while Jalal McKie posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Xpress pulled away in the third quarter when Simeon Cottle netted 11 of his 13 points in the frame. Michael Matthews chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss for the Canes. - Kyle Sandy
