Kyle Sandy's Friday Night Georgia Cup III Notebook

The third installment of the Georgia Cup series featured some new faces and some familiar ones. The performance of the night from Norcross High School saw Jack Hayes (pictured) of 12U MTXE burry eight threes en route to a 24-point night. Hayes couldn’t miss as he nailed deep ball after deep ball to give MTXE the separation it needed in a 43-30 win over Georgia Trendsetters Black.

Maegahoops, no stranger to dominating the competition in our 12U Division, scored a 41-25 win over All Georgia. Zakary Thomas played floor general, scoring nine points while Alexander Diggs added 16 points. The duo have been the catalyst for Maegahoops’ success this summer.

After losing 43-12 to the 9U Gwinnett Hawks in Georgia Cup I, Synergy Select nearly shocked the Hawks tonight. Select lost 24-22 but battled till the final buzzer with just six players. Big man Alonzo Jackson paced Synergy Select with 11 points. Amir Taylor led the Hawks with eight points and Jalen Glover added five.

Remember Me?

Jaylen Carruth of 12U East Point Runnin Rebels and Andre Young of Georgia Canes 2022 have been two top performers in the 12U Division at every Georgia Cup. Young’s Canes came back to beat Carruth’s Rebels at the HoopSeen Regional and it looks like the two may meet again here at Georgia Cup III. Carruth did it all in the fourth quarter against Georgia Trendsetters Grey, turning a 24-21 deficit heading into the fourth into a 45-30 blowout win. Carruth sparked the 24-6 fourth quarter advantage, blocking shots, hitting threes and finishing inside on his way to a team-high 15 points. Young propelled the Canes to a 48-24 win over TNBC with a 16-point showing.

16U Standouts

In Norcross High’s only 16U action Team Forrest College Bound erased an early fourth quarter deficit to defeat Team Athens 63-56. Jamiel Wright was shifty in the backcourt for Team Forrest and slithered his way to the hoop for a team-high 12 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Trenton Rogers was a beast on the glass collecting a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Cedar Shoals duo of Jai’vanni McDavid and Darrien Appling played well for Team Athens. McDavid scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds before injuring his foot late in the game. Appling added four points, but his money was made on the defensive end inside, blocking four shots. Kobe Haley came off the bench to net 13 points, grab five rebounds and block two shots for Team Athens.
