Eddy's Georgia Cup Friday Notebook

Young Programs Roll Deep at the Georgia Cup

This is the largest Georgia Cup since the tournament series began 3 years ago.  Over 154 teams are competing this weekend and the depth across the younger divisions, in particular, is going to make for an exciting and competitive weekend of play.  Making it to the championship on Sunday won’t be easy.

Atlanta Synergy

Keep an eye on this young program.  They have been dominant all year long in their age group (10U) so decided to play up this weekend to test themselves against older competition.  The result?  Synergy had no problems in their opening round win.   They continue to be on of the teams that sets the bar in the Peach State in the younger divisions.  They bring a balanced attack and plenty of size.  They took home the GA Cup I trophy in the 10U division.  They will be trying to bring it home this weekend in the 11U division, no easy task given the depth of the field.

EOTO building quite the pipeline of talent

EOTO is certainly a program we are familiar with at HoopSeen.  Director Burkley James has done a great job over the years of fielding competitive teams all the way through high school.  One thing that was certainly on display Friday night at the Georgia Cup was just how well he has built the program for the future.  EOTO has numerous young teams in various age groups who could be serious contenders this weekend.

Is Atlanta Xpress Whetstone the top 6th grade team in Georgia?

It seems the Atlanta Xpress are the 6th grade team to beat in Georgia right now.  There are a number of talented teams in that age division this weekend.  Can any of them knock the Xpress off that top spot?  We’ll know Sunday.  But in the meantime it should be fun to see how the games play out. The Xpress have good scoring guards but its their bigs who allow them to impose their will on a game.  Anyone who plans to beat them will have to figure out how to deal with the size of their frontline.

Other Notes

Ellis Pitts has spent a lot of time at HoopSeen tournaments over the years following his 2 older brothers around as they competed.  Tonight he had an opportunity to shine himself and he did leading the Smooth Improvement Kings with 14 points in an overtime win over TNBC.

The 10U Roswell Bombers always seem to be in the mix at the Georgia Cup.  Expect them to be once again this weekend.  Tyson Pittman continues to stand out while teammates such as Blake Haynes and others continue to improve.

There are numerous teams playing in their first Georgia Cup this weekend.  One of those is the 10U Dekalb Knights who had a good opening night and seemed to get offense from pretty much the entire roster.

TNBC 2024 lost in one of the best contests of the night, and R. Bernath and J. Oliver both put in nice performances for Adrian Collins’ squad.

10U Georgia Excel had a good opening night. J. Reddick had 16 points and E. Taylor had 13 in their impressive win.
