17U Platinum Best of the South Champions: MidPro Academy
ATLANTA—To little surprise, the best independent team in the country, MidPro Academy takes home the 17U Platinum division trophy with a 65-55 win over Gain Elite.
A pair of Iowa commits in Owen Freeman and Brock Harding led the way for MidPro in the championship game as was the case for much of the weekend. The duo combined for 35 points.
Early on, Gain Elite brought the fight to MidPro with CJ Ohara scoring nine first-half points and giving the team some toughness and energy. MidPro created some separation before Gain Elite guard Nasir Whitlock got going and helped close the first hald on a run to cut their deficit to seven at the half.
However, Freeman took over for MidPro in the second half and helped give them a comfortable lead going into the final stretch of the game.
Ohara led Gain Elite with 15 points and Whitlock added 10 for the Minnesota squad.
This time last year, MidPro proved to be one of the best 16U teams in the country with a championship win at the Grassroots Summer Championships in Orlando. This year, they did the same thing as a 17U team at Best of the South.
