6-foot-4 guard Larry Johnson has been one of the nation’s risers in the class. This past week at the Pangos All-American Camp, Johnson supplemented a strong spring by being one of the best, most consistent players at the prestigious event.

“This is one of those camps where people that are slept on can come in and showcase what they do,” Johnson said.

With NBA scouts, national scouts, and national media in the building, Johnson was one of the players that best used the platform to their advantage.

Shooting the ball,” Johnson said of his Pangos success. “A lot of people don’t know that I can really shoot the ball too. I feel like I’ve been showing that off and showing my athleticism, of course.”

Recruiting

Virginia Tech, Alabama, Missouri, Florida State, Georgia, and Tennessee are among the many schools that Johnson listed as the ones that are pursuing him the hardest.

He’s already been on a visit to Tennessee.

“It was a great experience,” Johnson said of his visit. “The fans showed a lot of love.”

Virginia Tech and Missouri are two of Johnson’s next visits that he’s planning for the summer.

A spring rise

It wasn’t too long ago that Johnson was an emerging local prospect in Georgia at Beach (GA) HS.

Johsnon’s national ascent dates back to a strong winter with Huntington Prep. That set the table and put him on the map as a national name.

However, it was a spring spent on one of the EYBL’s best teams, Team Thad, that has vaulted him into HoopSeen’s top 100 and into top 150 lists among some of the other services.

“Being a leader and showing that I can run the one,” Johsnon said when asked about what improvements have helped him get to this point. “I can play wherever the coach puts me.”

With more buzz around his name, Johnson will likely have more coaches checking in on him during upcoming live periods.

“I can shoot, play defense, and create for others,” Johnson said when asked what he’s still looking show college coaches.

Johnson said that winning Peach Jam with Team Thad is among his summer goals as well.

HoopSeen Opinion

Johnson is quickly becoming one of the hottest prospects in the country. At No. 84 in the latest HoopSeen ranking update, Johnson’s Pangos performance showed that his initial inclusion in the top 100 might be too low.

With continued summer success, he’s being monitored as a player who could see another bump up at the end of July.

Johnson’s known for his athleticism and defensive prowess in the backcourt. Both were on display at Pangos, especially his athleticism.

What seems to have improved the most is his jumper. Johnson was consistent with it throughout the three days at camp. He hit a variety of shots from all over the floor.

On a loaded Team Thad squad, Johnson will have the opportunity to continue his rise in July. After transferring to So Cal Academy, he’ll continue to be in the national spotlight at high school events.
