Best of the South Day 1 Notebook from Justin Byerly
Atlanta, Georgia - The Best of the South is here again. The epicenter of July recruiting happens every year at The Georgia International Convention Center and we were there to take it all in and be the first ones to tell you about the best independent teams in the country.
Best of the South Record?
Refuse to Lose guard Dalton Black may have set a Best of the South scoring record with his 51 point outburst on the opening day of our annual event. He is one of those guys that can get hot and you had better either guard him or sit back and watch. It seemed like a lot of sitting back and watching must have taken place. The 6-foot-3 guard was unstoppable at the time when you need to be. In front of college coaches.
The Wae To Win
Norcross Heat's Enzo Wea had some college coaches talking during his game against Stars Basketball Club 17U. The 6-foot-8 big man scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win. The physically imposing forward runs the floor well, can knock down some mid-range shots and likes to be at the rim. Wea has had a super travel season and is starting off his weekend with a game that college coaches took notice of.
Hurricane Season
The Durham Hurricanes just continue to play as a team and they continue to win on our stage. Today, against Team Gold Coast, the final score was no indication of this game ever really being close. It is always a balanced attack with so many weapons that Coach Jeffries has on his squad. Whether it was Wake Forest football commit Devin Goldston (who started out the game with 11 straight points) knocking down threes, Aden Jeffries showing he is a collegiate three and D guy or the guard duo of Brendon Watley and Jakari Glaspie, this team will use them all and they will win. I am looking forward to watching them the rest of the weekend.
Holmes & Thomason
Holmes & Thomason. That sounds like a law firm but these guys were dominate in SEBA's win over SI Select in overtime. SI Select last played with us at our Grassroots Showcase and they dominated in Louisville en route to becoming champions. SEBA came out and matched their intensity throughout the game and came away with the win. Holmes finished with 22 points (two nasty dunks in traffic) and Thomason was the leading scorer with 25 points. This was a big win for SEBA to open up the weekend before bracket play starts and team pack their bags.
