2025 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions Top Overall Performers Part II
SUWANEE, GA - The Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions is one of the most storied, prestigious platforms in the travel basketball world. Shoe-sponsored teams and independents meet and battle through the weekend until champs are crowned.
Along the way, the best players separate themselves. The known add to their resume while under-the-radar names emerge on the big stage. To stand out, to be a top guy is different at Gibbons.
We have so much to get into from the weekend, and it all starts with part II of the top overall performers from the 17U division.
DJ Roberson, Tennessee Tigers - Roberson doesn’t get the credit that he deserves. After taking in more games this weekend, I see what the real value Roberson can bring to the floor. He is such a versatile prospect and has great size and is close to 6-foot-7. He can shake and bake out on the perimeter and make shots. He can battle inside for rebounds and put-backs. He does a really good job of handling the ball at his size.
On the defensive side, he can block shots, has great timing as a rebounder and he can muscle opponents around. He was named all-state again this season for Chattanooga Prep and helped lead them to a state title. I have always liked guys that understand what it takes to win a state title at the high school level and I think that translates in travel basketball and at the next level. - Justin Byerly
Jamari Bolden, Team Gold Coast - Jamari Bolden can GO! In the two games I caught this weekend, Bolden dropped 21 and 19 points. He can score from all over the floor, and once he got going, there was no stopping him.
He put up 19 in a matchup against Drifty Chrome Hearts with a big crowd in attendance—and he stole the show. The 6’1” guard proved he could score with the best of them at Gibbons. - Mekhi McKinney
Angel Brown, Team New York - Brown was steadily in the box score all weekend long for Team New York and we got the chance to see him on Sunday with his program. The 6-foot-1 guard from New York was hard to guard and dropped 16 points in the win over STY.
It's fun to watch these programs from different areas of the country and the way they play. Brown plays like a New York City guard. Tough, skilled and can score. Brown helped his team go 4-1 on the weekend with their only loss coming in the semi-finals of the Ja Morant bracket against eventual champions Georgia Stars RP. - Justin Byerly
Carson McKenney, SelfMade Ballers - Carson McKenney left this weekend with a new fan in me after watching him play at Gibbons. At 6-foot-6 with a wide frame, McKenney played a point-center role for SelfMade Ballers. He consistently made exceptional passes out of the post. Just when you’d question what he was doing, he’d hit a cutter for an open layup—showcasing his patience and the attention he draws with the ball in his hands.
He completely opened up games for his team with his ability to stretch the floor, knocking down multiple three-pointers in each game. If you’re looking to watch some good basketball, just find the court Carson McKenney is playing on. - Mekhi McKinney
Jake Harney, Shockers 2026 - This guy has played well for two straight weekends. First in Louisville and then again down here in Atlanta. Harney is an excellent floor general that can make shots. If he is not making shots, he is distributing the ball. His stat line for the weekend in Atlanta was crazy.
Through four games at The Bob Gibbons, Harney averaged 9.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists. This is coming from a 5-foot-10 guard. Harney is one of those bulldog type guards that have the will and the heart to compete throughout the game and knows what it takes to win. He is a skilled guard that can score from all spots on the floor, he can defend and he can make the right play.
He reminds me of one of those guards back in middle school and high school that probably just stayed in the gym. Winter, Spring, Fall, Summer this kid was in the gym and he was working. He didn’t have the size of other guards so he made up for it with doing EVERYTHING else really well. - Justin Byerly
