Youngsters shine at the Grassroots Basketball Finale on Thursday
BEAU HARVEY & IAN HOWARD ARE A DYNAMIC DUO
15U Rod Howard Select has quite possibly the best guard tandem in the field after what I saw on Thursday. They combined for 46 points and SEVEN threes on the way to an 82-74 win vs. Global Squad early in the day.
Harvey set the tone from the opening tip. He kept his hands in the passing lanes, poking the ball away for quick steals and frustrating their offense. In transition, there’s no hesitance on his next move. Whether taking it strong to the rim or dumping it off to the trailer, Harvey continued to make play-after-play. From the outside, he’s deadly. Harvey sank four threes and finished with 25 points.
Howard made some noise in the first half, but in the second is where he really got it going. The wiry guard started the half with two quick treys from the wing and did the rest of his damage by driving into the lane and finishing with contact from defenders. Howard walked away with 21 points and three long balls. Excited to see how these two will develop over the next few years.
BLAKE WILSON IS A STUD
This forward/wingman for 17U “Ball4Lyfe” was an absolute gem yesterday vs. Team Prolook. The 6’5” Wilson exploded early, scoring 16 points in the first half by-way of the midrange jumper and floater. Did a great job of scoring at the rim, as well. Hit a couple of threes. In the second half, he focused more on the outside shooting. Wilson sank three more treys as a part of an 11-point half, finishing with 27 points on the night. In the final minutes, his defensive intensity was turned up. He’s not afraid to put a body on someone and guard the best player on the opposing team. Loved his energy on the rebounding front as well. Wilson is absolutely a guy to look out for as the event goes on.
RISING FRESHMEN AREN’T SCARED TO PLAY UP
I’ll admit that D.J. Sandi has some solid size as a 2026 guard. But, 14-years-old is 14 years old. Many freshmen may be a bit nervous to play with the 16U/2024 group, but Sandi appeared unfazed. His Florida Pro squad matched up with “All-In Beasts” on Thursday night, and he facilitated the rock beautifully as the primary point guard. Aside from that, his ball-handling skills are above-average for his age. Sandi was able to weave into the defense and convert at the cup, regardless of if he was getting hit on the way or not. At the free-throw line, he kept his poise. It’s fitting that he scored 14 points en route to a 66-53 win. The next four years will be a sight to see from this kid.
