Grassroots Finale: Josh Tec's Notes from Saturday's Bracket Play

VIRGINIA BEACH—Here we go, we’re facing HoopSeen’s final salvo into the 2022 AAU season. Don’t fret, fall camp season will be here before you know it, and HoopSeen will be keeping busy during the early weeks of August. Before we send this travel season off with some championship winners on Sunday at the 2022 Grassroots Finale, let’s take a look at what happened on Saturday.

DMV forwards battle in the morning

Logan Lewis and Jaden Daughtry shine in a DMV battle. The two forwards led their teams in a tightly-contested Sweet 16 matchup.

Lewis finished with 29 to advance PSB DMV to the Elite Eight while Daughtry finished with 21 to help fuel a VA Havoc comeback that nearly resulted in a win.

Lewis is a mismatch issue on offense at this level because he usually draws bigger defenders, and he can use his ball skills to drive by them and get easy buckets at the rim. Physically he can overwhelm smaller guards.

Lewis isn’t one to back down from bigger matchups on both ends of the floor. He plays with a toughness and edge that coaches at the next level will love. He’s a Swiss-Army-knife player that can fill any role he’s tasked with.

Daughtry is a grown man around the basket. He’s so physical and tenacious. He made a killing securing rebounds and muscling people up down low. He’s 6-foot-6 but plays bigger. Like Lewis, he’s tough as nails and plays with grit.

The game of the day

Team Takeover National and TSF Elite duked it out in what will go down as one of the most memorable games of the weekend.

Takeover pulled out a 64-60 win in overtime in front of a mob of onlookers that included several college coaches.

Despite Tyler Perkins leaving the game early with an injury, Takeover got major contributions from Terrell Webster, Jase Mosley and Michael Montano

Webster led the team with 16 points. The 6-foot-3 guard has been one of the weekend’s standouts and continued to add to his Grassroots Finale accolades with a big performance on a major stage.

Mosley and Montano both finished in double figures and hit timely shots. Montano hit the putback that decided the game.

As has been the case all weekend, Destin Logan and Cris Carroll impressed for TSF.

Logan has been one of the most consistently great players of the weekend and added another 20-plus point game to his resume.

Carroll hit the 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime, and he finished with 14 points.

Some names from 15U to know

York Ballers’ Ben Rill is an intriguing prospect. He’s a 6-foot-7 forward who can handle the ball well and make plays from the wing. Rill led York Ballers in a tight game over the talented Georgia Canes with 33 points. Keep an eye on him moving forward.

Garner Road passes the eye test with a pair of 6-foot-7 forwards in Preston Copeland and Andrew Grimes. These are two guys with tremendous upside. We could be hearing a ton from them over the coming years.

Sticking with Garner Road, guard Camren Reyes looks like he could be one of the next great guards to come out of North Carolina. He’s deadly when he’s in attack mode and making his way towards the basket. He uses shot fakes and changing speeds well to get to the rim where he finishes everything. Reyes has a nice mid-range game as well.

Quick Hitters

In a 16U matchup, Team PUSH’s backcourt of Brandon Jennings and Isaiah Fuhrmann advanced them in the bracket with a combined 33 points. Despite an explosive second half from KLow’s Devin Booker, the PUSH backcourt proved to be too much to handle at the end of the day.

The House We Built has been one of the more impressive teams of the weekend in the 17U division. They’ve been led by guard Kahlil Singleton who has been one of the players of the weekend. He advanced them to the Final Four with 17 points.

Zyere Edwards has put together a fantastic weekend for PSB Atlanta. He’s been a constant for a team that made it to the Elite Eight. Edwards has been shooting the cover off of the ball in Virginia Beach. His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by coaches. He’s picked up offers from Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon over the weekend. With as well as he’s played, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more schools extend offers.
