Josh Tec's Grassroots Showcase Notebook: Day Two
LOUISVILLE - Saturday was a huge day. It's hard for me to explain how massive this event truly is. I saw a parade of amazing players and teams for over 12 hours straight. Seriously, the talent in the building was unreal, and there was a lot of it.
While there's no shortage of things that keep running through my mind from the day, here are three quick notes:
Georgia Underclassmen Shine Early: While people were still shaking off the morning fog in their brains, two Georgia freshmen were wide awake and ready to go.
In the 8 a.m time slot, Max Skidmore went off for 36 points for Tri-City Elite. Out of all of the amazing players that I saw, Skidmore had the best individual performance on Saturday.
At 10:10, Jax Abernathy hung 25 points on an exceedingly talented The Family EYBL team.
Skidmore showcased his range by draining five 3-pointers. He made his way to the rim with ease too. In Abernathy’s highlight performance, he did most of his damage in the first half, and he was able to get whatever he wanted on offense.
These two guys have been lighting up people’s radars throughout the travel season thus far, and Saturday morning showed that they show no plans of letting up. They’re special players that will be fun to follow over the coming years.
Meanstreets EYBL: This could be the team that I leave the weekend being most enamored by. Kam Craft, Jalen Washington and AJ Casey individually are next-level players with tremendous upside.
In their game against C2K Elite, Kam Craft went crazy from 3-point range. He hit five from beyond the arc and nailed some from audaciously deep. Craft finished with 27 points.
Jalen Washington is one of the most all-around talented players at the Grassroots Showcase. He’s impressed with his size, touch around the rim and ability to stretch the floor.
AJ Casey is another player with good size and potential. In the game I saw of theirs, Casey showed flashes of why he’s such a highly-coveted player.
All three players have been receiving significant high-major attention, and it’s easy to see why. Expect to get more detailed, deeper dives into them individually soon.
Team Thad vs Mid-Pro Academy: This game was easily the best game that I saw on Saturday. Team Thad narrowly won 40-39. I know that score doesn’t scream excitement, but the game was a thrill from start to finish.
Part of what made it so great was the atmosphere around the court. There were about three rows of people surrounding the court, and they were hanging on to every play of the game. It’s that kind of buzz that we’ve all been missing for the last year.
We’ll be breaking down some of the individual stars of this game soon.
