Region Tournament Watch: 7A

It’s tournament time in the Peach State!

The start of the most exciting time of year, region tournaments have tipped and will be picking up heavily throughout the week.

To celebrate the first full week of playoff basketball in Georgia, we’re taking a look at some of the region tournaments to watch.

Whether it’s watching for a specific player to perform or to watch a tournament with a number of potential outcomes, 7A region tournaments are shaping up to be as fun as ever.

3-7A: This is a tournament to watch to see what Ace Bailey might do for McEachern. The Indians were largely untested during region play, but Bailey filled highlight reels with audacious plays that had Peach State basketball heads going straight to group chats to discuss his most recent escapades.

Bailey is the No. 1 player in the state, and his case to be the No. 1 player in the country is becoming stronger by the game.

While the outcome of this tournament isn’t in question, it could be the one driving the most buzz on social media if Bailey gets loose.

Hey, if there’s an upset that sees McEachern bounced, that will be one of the biggest stories of the week, so that’s a possibility too.

4-7A: The previous region was based on one player’s exploits, and this one is mostly—not entirely—centered on a specific team.

Grayson has been the top dog in the state since the season tipped. The Rams have amassed an impressive 23-2 record while going a perfect 10-0 in region play. They’ve gone undefeated against teams in Georgia entirely as well.

There’s plenty of talent remaining in this tournament—games started on Saturday—so it’s not ironclad that Grayson will run away with it. In fact, Newton took the Rams to OT during region play.

However, if one is looking to see the best team in the state, Grayson is the one to watch in the 4-7A tournament.

5-7A: It’s not all that often that we see Wheeler enter a region tournament as the No. 2 seed, but after splitting their pair of games, Walton enters as the No. 1 seed.

The potential for a rubber match that decides the season series between the two is exciting. There are stakes, bragging rights at play in this tournament.

Within the scope of this season, there isn’t a clear favorite between the two either. If we get this matchup for a championship, it will be a coin toss at tip and one that Cobb County will show out for.

7-7A: The final region tournament we’re focusing on in 7A is the most up in the air. Between Peachtree Ridge, Norcross, Berkmar and North Gwinnett, there are plenty of Georgia’s big-name programs vying for the 7-7A tournament crown.

This is the tournament with the most variance at the top. I couldn’t tell you who should be favored. There’s a case to be made for any of the aforementioned four.

At the end of the day, this is the most interesting one to me because of its unpredictability.
