The elite eight is set for Georgia’s highest classifications. 7A and 6A will see some star-studded, marquee matchups that feel more like final four games or championship games than elite eight games. Here are five that we’re looking forward to. 

Wheeler at McEachern: Wednesday will see THE game of the season. These two powers boast five stars and multiple high-major prospects. The stars will be shining bright at McEachern High School. Can Wheeler go on the road and keep marching to Macon, or will the Indians be able to make a statement and end Isaiah Collier’s high school career? Regardless, this game will garner national attention, and we already know the Peach will be buzzing leading up to this marquee matchup. 

Newton at Norcross: While the Wheeler and McEachern game will be the game of the week, there’s another battle between Georgia’s elites. Newton goes on the road to take on the reigning 7A champion, Norcross. A year ago, these two teams met in the final four in a game in which Norcross won by three. Newton’s star seniors will look to avenge that result while Norcross has their sights set on a repeat. 

Grovetown at Lanier: 6A has some monster elite eight games, and this battle is right at the top of that list. Grovetown was the heavy favorite to repeat in 6A, but the Warriors stumbled during a stretch of tough games. While they took their lumps, they’re playing their best basketball of the season now. Going on the road to Lanier isn’t going to be a walk in the park. The Longhorns have a talented frontcourt in Osmar Garcia and Jayce Nathaniel. Whoever emerges on the other side of this one will be the favorite to make it to Macon. 

Etowah at St. Pius X: What’s up, Atlanta Allstars? This 6A battle will see three AAU teammates take the floor. Etowah is a group that’s capable of hanging points on the board in a hurry. Virginia Tech signee Brandon Rechsteiner and the Eagles will be going into one of the best environments in the state at St. Pius. Led by Tulane signee Spencer Elliott, St. Pius can be stifling defensively, and there aren’t many teams that play as hard and cohesively as the Golden Lions. 

Alexander at Jonesboro: The southside is going to be one of the places to be this week when Jonesboro hosts Alexander. These have arguably been the best teams in 6A this season. They’ve been the two most consistent at least. From a pure talent perspective, Alexander has the edge with multiple DI players, but there’s a certain grit that southside teams play with that could negate the talent advantage. This is as much of a coin flip as any game in the elite eight.
