GBCA Live: Quick hitters from Saturday

EMERSON, GA—Saturday at the first GBCA Live weekend was a busy one. 12 hours in the gym yielded plenty of notes, plenty of conversations.

Here are some of the highlights, memorable moments from what I was able to take in.

Morning

Mustangs pace the race

Mount Vernon started the morning off as well as anyone. They set the tone for an action packed first stanza of the day.

2024 G Sha’Yah Goba has been one of Georgia’s stockrisers this spring. He’s been playing his best basketball as of late, and Saturday morning may have been the best performance, and it came with a sideline full of coaches.

Goba showed a deepened offensive skillset, and he played his patented tough defense.

Trey Scott has been battling the injury bug for much of the last year or so, but he’s back in action for Mount Vernon, and he did what he does best, and that’s hit shots. At Scott’s size, his shooting ability is what has him in demand more so than anything else.

2025 G KJ Garris is going to be one of the leading scorers for this team, and he kept up his consistency in that department with another double-digit effort.

Xavier Shegog was also a bright spot in the morning win for Mount Vernon.

Windermere underclassmen shine

Brandon Bass has a good looking jumper that he flexed early on Saturday. It’s the kind of shot that looks like it’s going in every time. Bass also plays a mature game for a rising sophomore. It’s clear that his basketball lineage has benefitted him.

Sinan Huan is a 2026 7-footer that will likely be getting national attention at some point down the line. He’s big, he’s young, but he’s better than a lot of bigs his age. Huan is sure in his movements in the post and has some skill. His best days are ahead of him, but his present is also pretty good.

Ricky McKenzie stays hot for Wheeler

Since the end of the high school season, 2024 G Ricky McKenzie has been playing well for the Wildcats.

He gave them a reliable scoring punch during their state championship run, and he’s picked up where he’s left off through two games of GBCA Live.

McKenzie is a shotmaker through and through. That’s his specialty, and he’s lived up to his reputation with two hot shooting performances.

He knocked down four 3-pointers in a 16-point performance to help lead the Wildcats over Westminster Academy.

Afternoon and Evening

Pembroke Pines Charter impresses in the afternoon

Jeremy Elyzee’s length is what immediately stands out. At HoopSeen, I’ve gotten to see him plenty with Florida Pro, but this might have been his most impressive outing of the year in front of me. He used his length well defensively and on the glass, and he had good shooting moments from deep.

Josh Harris did a lot well, but his effort was what kept shining through. His motor mixed with his stronger 6-foot-8 frame made him hard to contend with on either end of the floor. He was a bully out there. He also showed some offensive versatility. He had to have been close to 20 points and 15 rebounds. It felt like every rebound was his.

Adrian Shackleton is another Florida Pro guy who has been awesome on the HoopSeen platform. He was good for Pembroke as well with a double figure game.

Oak Ridge overwhelms

In their first two games of the day, Oak Ridge overwhelmed with a blend of depth, balance and athleticism.

If we’re talking stockrisers from the weekend, Tyler Johnson has to be among the first names mentioned. He was great in both games as the leading scorer with 19 in each. He finished with plenty of toughness and athleticism at the rim.

Speaking of finishes at the rim, there aren’t many in the gym that can do it like Jamier Jones. The 2025 guard is powerfully bouncy and has created several highlights already. He’s also shown good touch on his jumper, and he’s made some tremendous passes.

2025 PG Jalen Reece did a good job running the show. He’s steady with the ball and distributed to the scorers around him well. He’s scored when needed, but he’s best as the general of the team, and he’s thrived in his role.

Elijah Elliott, Cameron Simpson and Jordan Tillery delivered as well. They add to the overall depth, versatility and switchability of this team. Both offensively and defensively, they’ve all proved that they’re worthy of plenty of attention from the next level.

More quick hitters

2025 G Colt Langdon had a good performance to close the afternoon session. He’s gotten high-major interest for good reason. Langdon scores the ball well from all levels and can be especially dangerous with his jumper. The lefty guard should keep building his list of offers with performances like the one I saw.

2026 G Kota Suttle picked up an offer from Georgia. The Wheeler guard has a strong build at the position already, and his feel for the game is advanced for his age. While he’s still young, Suttle has shown plenty of promise in his young career. This time next year, he could see more recruitment come his way.

Back from Italy playing at the Adidas Eurocamp, 2024 G Gicarri Harris was probably jetlagged while playing with Grayson, but he didn’t look it. He’s one of Georgia’s most steady prospects. He’s not going to blow anyone away in one particular area, but he’s good at everything, and he has a high IQ.

There’s a brand new face in the Peach State. Milton’s Anthony Gause generated some buzz on Saturday evening with a 25-point game for the Eagles. The 2024 guard showed plenty of promise and should use this as a momentum builder moving forward.
