Josh Tec's 2022 Tip-Off Notes from Saturday's Slate

SUWANEE, Ga—Boom, Saturday of Tip-Off is in the books. I’m getting my AAU legs under me again. What a doozy of a day too. I feel like I just overloaded on great game after great game. When my keyboard gets worn out by Noon, I know it’s been a good day.

Today was especially fun because I segmented my day out. In the morning, I took in some 17U games, then I switched things up and hit some of the younger age groups in the afternoon. What did I see throughout the day?

Yeh, This Guy’s Good:

Jadon Yeh started off the day with a bang. BCB stands for Blue Collar Basketball, and he lives up to that moniker. While I was shaking off the morning haze with a cup of coffee in hand, Jadon Yeh was drawing charges and fighting for rebounds against monsters. When a guard is scrappy enough to pull boards against 6-foot-7 and above, I’ll always be impressed.

Aside from playing hard-hat basketball, Yeh’s also a highly-skilled guard with range on his jumper. He knocked in 5 3-pointers in BCB’s morning game.

On a day in which I saw high-caliber player after high-caliber player, Jadon Yeh’s a guy who stood out among the best of the best.

Add Another Star:

The list of players from the Georgia Stars program that made an impression on me grew from a day ago. On Saturday, Mady Traore added his name to my list.

The French big man out of Maryland showed out for the Georgia Stars with 13 points and a handful of blocks and rebounds. At 6-foot-11, Traore controlled the paint and made it difficult for opposing guards to score around the rim.

Traore has amassed several offers from solid high to mid-major programs already, but if he keeps playing as he did on Saturday morning, that list will only grow. It feels like he’s only scratching the surface in terms of his potential.

Bringing the Heat:

At a certain point during AAU Saturdays, there’s a wall that everyone hits. For me, it typically comes early in the afternoon. When I was hitting my wall, I needed something to jolt me back to life, and Norcross Heat delivered that via a resounding 20-point win.

This team is a deep, talented group. It showed when four of their guys finished in double figures and one more had 9 points.

Mike Kinnard led the way with 14 while Eddie Hendricks, Keishawn Hampton and Solomon Mustafa Reid added 10 each. After a hot-shooting performance on Friday, Dayton Richardson added 9 points during their Saturday afternoon onslaught.

I can already tell you that this team is going to win a lot of games over the course of the spring and summer.

South Florida Shine:

Miami’s Shon Abaev shined for the Georgia Stars 2025 squad on Saturday afternoon. He’s a 6-foot-5 guard with a deep, impressive skill set.

Abaev is a lefty that can score in bunches and fast. Despite playing limited minutes, he came in and immediately rattled off 10 points within a minute or so. A couple of 3-pointers, a nice back door cut for an easy layup, and a mid-range pull-up accounted for his microwave moment.

What’s most impressive about his game is his passing acumen and court vision. Abaev delivers no-look passes square into shooting pockets with the utmost ease.

While young, Abaev is already a mighty impressive prospect. As he continues to develop as a player, he has a chance to be a guy that attracts a ton of attention.
