Deakin Pereira Commits to Cal State Fullerton
The Versatile Big!
Deakin Pereira, a 6-foot-9 forward residing in Ocean Springs, MS, came onto the Hoopseen radar when he put on a fantastic performance in Orlando with Team Speights AL Select.
Pereira has excellent size, and his footwork in the paint is very solid. He is a strong rebounder on both ends of the floor, and he works hard for 2nd chance shots. One of his best qualities is his ability to extend his range out to the three-point line.
Having a player that can work the post and step out for the shot is a skill that most college coaches are looking for in a big. Pereira's post moves are top-notch; he is a master of backing down defenders and finishing strong at the basket with a quick up and under or a smooth hook shot.
The Commitment
On October 8, Pereira verbally committed to Cal State Fullerton. He was asked what led to his decision.
"I've always dreamed of living in California and attending a good college," he said. "The environment and family that Cal State Fullerton provides is amazing, and it feels like home."
Pereira said he took his visit a couple of months ago, and it was terrific.
"The campus is beautiful, and I really enjoyed my time there," he said.
He says that the relationship with the coaches is great already.
"It's a big family at Cal State Fullerton, and I love that."
Pereira is a well versatile big and can indeed make a massive impact on Cal State right away. He was asked what he could bring to the program.
"I believe I can bring a lot of things to Fullerton," he said. "I can stretch the floor, score from all three levels on the court, and my passing/playmaking ability."
Pereira’s Next Move
Pereira says what's next for him is to finish his senior year and then put all his focus and attention on college.
He will finish his final season in prep basketball with Grace Baptist Academy, coached by Brad Shauf.
