Butta Johnson Seclects UAB

After weeks of speculation, 6-foot-4 guard Butta Johnson decided to stay close to home with his commitment to the University of Alabama - Birmingham.

Since making his jump over to Alabama a few years ago, Johnson has become the most talked-about guard in the state.

Johnson helped Grissom to a 25-6 record as he finished the regular season with 26 points and eight rebounds a game; he would be selected 1st team 7A All-Area.

With offers from McNeese State University, Tennessee Tech University, & St. Bonaventure University, some wondered where one of the best remaining guards on the board would land, and Johnson’s decision did not disappoint.

Becoming a Blazer

Johnson said his commitment to UAB was just an excellent fit for him and that their style of play matched him perfectly.

“I think learning from high-level NCAA players such as Jordan Walker and Eric Gaines will help me be a better player,” he said.

Johnson says another reason he chose UAB because his relationship with head coach Andy Kennedy and what he can learn from him.

“Playing under Coach Kennedy will do me good because he was also a former player at UAB, so being around him and coaching me will make me a better all-around person on and off the court,” Johnson said.

What Can Butta bring to UAB?

This season Johnson showed that he can be trusted handling the rock under pressure and has a high-level IQ on dissecting the defense before making a move.

Johnson is fierce in pushing the ball in transition, and getting to the basket is most definitely his specialty. He’s also a great shooter from the midrange and beyond the arch. One thing Coach Kennedy will love about having Johnson on the floor is his ability to put in that same work on the defensive end.
