Getting to Know Zach Gray
We tapped in with 6-foot-6 guard Zach Gray from over in Hoover for this week's Alabama player profile. Gray had a successful season helping Spain Park high school to a 27-8 record and had a strong run in the playoffs. Just one game shy of making it to state, Spain Park fell short in double overtime, putting up an intense fight.
Playing as much as a reserve spot last season, Gray has worked hard this summer to play a more significant role in the Spain Park offense. Gray says one of the biggest improvements he made this summer was his shooting.
Gray has a nice frame playing off the wing; he does a solid job breaking down defenders for a quick lay-in. Gray has incredible control getting in between the defense and is very patient with his shot selection. Gray is very confident in his shot, and a close-out defender never phases him.
Gray had an outstanding summer, showcasing his talents at many camps in the state, and played some great travel ball with the PSB-Nashville team.
He stated that he was extremely excited to be back playing summer ball and learned quite a few things.
"Looking at all the guys I played against and learning how much better I have to get if I want to be the best player," he said.
College Interest
Gray has gained some interest from Appalachian State, Howard, Lipscomb, UAH, Auburn, and others with his consistent work ethic and hard play. Gray has a planned visit with Appalachian sometime soon.
Gray says he is looking for a great coach who will be fair and chill. As for his aspirations, Gray says he is trying to put himself in a position to play overseas or in the NBA.
As he heads into his junior year, Gray's goal is to try and win state and get an offer to continue his playing for the future.
Away from the game, Gray enjoys fishing and playing sand volleyball with his friends.
