Updating the 2019 Alabama rankings

After a busy and exciting summer, it is time to update our 2019 Alabama state rankings. With some transfers out of state across the board, there are some new spots open and players seized their opportunity during July. We have also extended these rankings out to 35 prospects.

For the past few years, the top-end of Alabama’s 2019 class has received some attention on the national scale, as the top five players in the state hold high-major scholarship offers, including LeFlore’s DeAntoni Gordon, who is verbally committed to Wichita State.

However, the top isn’t the only place of value in this class. There are several quality players throughout the list, headlined by the depth of the point guards.

CLASS OF 2019 ALABAMA RANKINGS

TOP FIVE REMAINS THE SAME

There is no surprise that Mountain Brook forward Trendon Watford holds firm as the No. 1 prospect in Alabama. After a quality travel season, Watford has staked his claim as one of the top forwards in the country, justifying his five-star ranking. Watford brings an impressive skill-set and versatility that many prospects his age cannot match at the present time.

Following behind Watford is Hazel Green point guard Kira Lewis. The 6-foot-2 guard performed well at the Nike Elite 100 camp during June and finished up July with some solid travel game performances. He is a priority for several high-major programs across the country, including Alabama and Auburn.

Kobe Brown, a position-less 6-foot-7 forward from Lee-Huntsville, checks in at No. 3. Playing with the Atlanta Celtics, Brown has landed a number of scholarship offers and has positioned himself as one of the most intriguing players in the Southeast because of his ability to play multiple positions and do a variety of things on the floor.

Carver-Montgomery wing Jaykwon Walton backed up his ranking throughout the travel season, as he was one of the most talked about prospects in the state. Over the course of the past few months, Walton has landed several high-major scholarship offers, the most recent one coming from Creighton.

Rounding out the top five is Wichita State commit DeAntoni Gordon. The LeFlore product is the only prospect in Alabama’s 2019 class that has already made his college decision. At 6-foot-7, Gordon is making the transition from power forward to more of a combo forward, and he has been impressive throughout the process.

BIG RISERS

Lee-Montgomery big man Demond Robinson only jumped up one spot in this rankings update, but don’t let that fool you – the 6-foot-8 center was very impressive in July with the Atlanta Xpress and continues to improve. He will be a priority player for several mid-major and high-major programs.

After an impressive July with Pro One Select, Brandon Nicholas jumps up six spots to No. 8. A talented shooter and scorer, the Huntsville native caught the eye of several college programs, including Kansas State, Middle Tennessee State, and UAB. He also recently transferred from Mae Jemison to Bob Jones.

J.P. Robinson, a talented facilitator and floor general from Deshler High School, moves up four spots to No. 16 in the class. The 5-foot-10 guard is by no means flashy, but he makes everyone around him better and there is plenty of value for that at the next level. He had a solid day of action at Samford’s elite camp this past weekend.

NEW FACES

Cooper Meadows had a breakout season at Prattville Christian last year and is an intriguing prospect to keep an eye on. The 6-foot-6 forward is skilled and has some sneaky athleticism to his game. He makes his initial entrance at No. 18 in the state.

He is far from a finished product, but Decatur Heritage power forward Noah Boler oozes with upside and potential. The skilled 6-foot-8 4 man improves each time out, and once that light comes on – watch out. Boler is a prospect to buy long-term stock in.

NO SHORTAGE OF POINT GUARDS IN 2019

By our count, there are eight players capable of playing the point that have the potential of being Division I basketball players.

Kira Lewis heads the list, but there are several talented prospects behind him.

Desmond Williams has blazing end-to-end speed and can get to the rim with ease; Cameron Tucker is one of the toughest perimeter scorers this class has; Kendon Knight and Justin Minter are both big combo guards that have a tremendous feel for the game that allow them to excel on the ball.

J.P. Robinson, Dee Pearson, and Eugene Leonard round out the group of talented point guards.
