Bob #Gibbons Tournament of Champions Spotlight: Devin Carter

Devin Carter was named Most Valuable Player at the Bob GIbbons Tournament of Champions. The 6-foot-3 guard from the Florida Knights was the trending player from the TOC weekend.

Duh.

The 6-foot-3 guard form Doral Academy (FL) was simply outstanding on the most historic stage in grassroots basketball. He and the Knights had a great 7-0 weekend and victories over the Atlanta Timberwolves, SC Kings, Team Charlotte Herron, Team Loaded NC, Georgia Stars, Manimal Elite and Team Parsons.

That’s a stellar resumé building stretch. Carter was consistently good and made sure everyone inside Suwanee Sports Academy knew who he and his teammates were. Winning the 17U bracket was the byproduct of continual improvement on the hardwood for Carter and the Knights.

“It means a lot for us to just start playing with each other,” Carter said. “It says that we have very good natural chemistry already and I think we will be the best team in July.”

It is hard to argue with that train of thought. The Knights have great depth and key players in key roles. The roster is deep with Division I talent.

For Carter, his travel ball success is a carryover from his successes on the high school stage. He had a terrific junior year, averaging 26.5 points on a team that went 31-1 on the season. At the Tournament of Champions, he showed a wide variety of skill.

“I feel like my playmaking ability was best and i feel like my scoring was pretty easy,” Carter said. “Gave my team my best effort and made sure we find a way to win.”

Carter has good basketball people in his life. His father, Anthony, played in the NBA for a dozen seasons. His high school coach is Jorge Fernandez, who coached at the Division I level for two decades.

Coming into the event, Carter was hearing from Charleston, VCU, Richmond, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, and Virginia Tech. Georgia and Iowa State have both reached out since the tournament. More high-majors should follow. He’s that kind of talent.

What will the separating factors be for Carter when he starts to look for his future collegiate home?

“Whoever shows the most interest in me and wants the best for me,” Carter said. “i gotta earn everything i want to get.”
