Mississippi State locks up commitment from Weatherspoon

During the spring and summer, Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland and his staff prioritized 2017 Velma Jackson (MS) point guard Nick Weatherspoon. There was never any question as to who the Bulldogs' top target was for the 2017 class, as the staff was a staple at Weatherspoon's games.

Sunday morning following an official visit, Weatherspoon returned the favor as he made his pledge to Mississippi State.

“Mississippi State is my home. I love them because Coach Howland lets his guards go," Weatherspoon told HoopSeen.com in a recent interview.

No player in the 2017 class has made a rise quite like Weatherspoon has done the past two years. Starting out as a standout with the SR1 Mississippi All-Stars, the 6-foot-1 guard used his ultra athleticism and Russell Westbrook-esque game to raise some eyebrows at the 2015 Atlanta Jam. Weatherspoon went on to being named as a top performer of the event.

Throughout the year, Weatherspoon has progressed with his game. The athleticism and ability to score at the rim has always been present, but this summer, he showed an improved shot from the perimeter. While he will be a highlight reel waiting to happen at the rim, the senior has proven he can't be left open from 3. Weatherspoon's progressions has landed himself at No. 21 in the HoopSeen125 rankings and a McDonald's All-American candidate.

Weatherspoon is the first pledge for the Bulldogs in 2017. However, he joins a lengthy list of talented guards in Starkville with Lamar Peters, Tyson Carter, and, his brother, Quinndary Weatherspoon.
