Stock trending upward for Michael Okauru

Every fall and winter, a few seniors pop out and see and their stock soar for various reasons. Whether it is late, physical development, improved ball skills, or seeing some of their peers make college commitments, programs are always in search of new names that could aid in securing wins at the next level. One prospect that is just now beginning to see his recruitment pick up is Michael Okauru, a 6-foot-4 combo guard headed to Brewster Academy within the coming weeks.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Okauru definitely looks the part but the hold up in the past has been with his ability to make the open jump shot. Running with the Garner Road travel program this past spring and summer, while the senior guard shot just 28 3-pointers throughout the adidas circuit, he did convert on over 38-percent of his attempts. However, where the intriguing prospect brings his greatest value to the floor is in his ability to rebound the ball from off of the perimeter, right along with his willingness and versatility in defending the basketball out top.

Displaying great athleticism and the perfect college body to develop, Okauru, born and raised in the heart of ACC country, is just now beginning to see his recruitment pick up. Headed to Brewster Academy this fall, expect for his options to multiply in suiting up for one of the top prep program.

Okauru gave further insight on his decision to make the move up north. “I had great years at Ravenscroft with Coach Billerman. He helped turn me into the player that I am now,” he stated. “I just wanted to go to a place where I would play against the best players all the time to prepare for college. I thought Brewster was the best fit for that.”

While the scholarship offers haven’t come in as he would have liked, a few college programs have begun to pick things up for the Carolina native. “I talk the most to Clemson, SMU, and Virginia Tech,” Okauru stated.

Of the programs in the hunt, only Clemson has offered thus far, though the Garner Road star did take an unofficial visit to Blacksburg this past Wednesday. “The visit went well. The coaching staff took me around campus and I also got the chance to talk to Buzz (Williams),” Okauru said. “We just talked about my summer and things of that nature.”

While no other visits are on the horizon, expect for a bevy of others to get involved with the competitive, athletic, and versatile guard where Okauru has the makings of a high-major playmaker that can wear many hats for his squad in the backcourt.
