Warnock changes approach in improvement

Changing one’s mindset is essential for one’s growth.

It took Amir Warnock some time but it all came together in his own head. He committed to being a better player and getting the opportunity to play at the next level. His list of schools has been trimmed down to Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, Gardner Webb and Jacksonville. He has an official visit set for the Florida school on September 26.

Warnock is interested in finding a college campus with his major of interest and a coaching staff that will help him develop on the court. He is committed to being the best possible player through basketball.

“I workout at school and work on my game,” said Warnock, who does it three times a day.

The commitment to playing himself into a college opportunity came just after his sophomore season. Warnock, the 6-foot-8 power forward, started getting some attention from college programs looking for a four-man who would develop in their program.

Seeing what opportunities are in front of him is something Warnock is taking notice starting with his weight. He dropped 25 pounds and is now looking to transform that frame into a work of art.

“I want to play this game for while,” Warnock said. “My work ethic has gone up because before I was lazy. I didn’t want to do anything. I just wanted to play.”

July was just the time for Warnock to show he could play against other players in his position. He also gave glimpses of his skills outperforming several in state four-men.

Warnock is aware that his needs to continued improvement. Some of the schools pursuing him want the Peachtree Ridge High product to compete for a position immediately.

“I just need to improve on my game so when that time comes I am ready,” Warnock said.
