MDC: Heat hits free throw late to win championship

SUWANEE, GA – Drama can best describe the 14U championship.

The NC Heat came back from a double-digit deficit before winning the Nike Memorial Day Classic title 61-60 on Sunday at Suwannee Sports Academy.

Lavar Batts helped the Tar Heel state program seal the game at the line. The guard was fouled on a questionable three-point attempt. He raced down the floor and was heaving a three-pointer when the referees whistle blew.

While the adults in the stands and the Kentucky coaches voiced their displeasure, Batts went to the free throw line hitting 2-of-3 for the Heats final lead. Kentucky had a chance to win at the buzzer but the shot hit the front end of the rim as time expired. Batts finished with 15 points. Malik Hamrick added 10 points in the win.

Just before Batts free throws, Kentucky help a 60-59 lead when a Thoroughbred player slipped the screen and found himself wide open for a layup. Kentucky scrabbled into its man-to-man defense then Batts was fouled and upon hearing the whistle he took a shot. The referee believed he was in the act of shooting sending Batts to the line.

Fans and coaches were irate enough that it caused a small delay before Batts went to the line. The rest was history and the Heat rode back to North Carolina as MDC championships.

Kel Slots poured in a team-high 15 points. Cole VonHandorf chipped in with 10.
